Father’s day was not celebrated in the United States until it was brought by Spanish and Portuguese to Latin America. The celebration was on March 19 then to honor St. Joseph according to the Catholic church. Through the years, father’s day date has been changed in America and other countries in Europe and other parts of the world follow the American date to celebrate father’s day and that falls on June. This date is to complement other similar celebrations honoring family members such as the Mother’s Day, Siblings Day and Grandparents Day.

In Europe, the Catholics celebrated on March 19 (St. Joseph’s Day) since the Middle Ages. This is to give honor to Joseph, the foster father of Jesus and the husband of Mary in the Bible.

Father’s Day is a tradition way back in the Middle Ages, and it was observed on 19 March, as the feast day of Saint Joseph, who is referred to as the fatherly Nutritor Domini (“Nourisher of the Lord”) in Catholicism and “the putative father of Jesus” in southern European tradition. However was not popular in the US until early of 20th century. Other nations in Asia wherever Catholic church is found follow the celebration as well like the Philippines. Other religious groups also follow the tradition.

Father’s day also became commercialized as many business establishments see good profit during this day because a lot of people are going out to celebrate this day. Most of businesses that benefit on this day are the restaurants, hotels, resorts, theme parks, and many others. Giving cards and flowers may not be so popular but people give alternative gifts to show their love to their dad.
