Today’s event—iBlog7: The 7th Philippine Blogging Summit—at the Malcolm Theater in the University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City, is really worthwhile. One of the things I could not forget about is that blogging is equal writing and writing skills. Blogging does not only talk about the topics, opinion, views and information you want to tell your target audience but all about style and passion in writing. If you have a lot of ideas in mind but do not know how to gather them together into sentences, into paragraphs, or into essay or story, you can not actually do blogging. You may not agree with my statement but wait. I am talking here about the content blogging and not the picture or video blogging where you do not really need to speak a word or write a sentence or paragraph to explain your ideas.
The summit is all about blogging on content. That’s why I said that if you do not know how to gather your ideas together into sentences, into paragraphs, or into essay or story, you can not actually do blogging. To create a content blog, you must have good skills in writing for blogging is writing according to Earth Rullan as she speaks about Blogger “Etiquette: How to be a Blogger with Integrity”.
The other things I could forget about during my listening to the talks during the event are the “Ten Power Blogging Advance Tips” by Mr. Carlo Ople of TV5 which I think are the most important things to remember for any bloggers out there.
The 10 Power Blogging Advance Tips includes but not limited to the following:
- Maximize your best blog entries—if you have owned certain keyword that is very popular and have a lot of traffic, you can actually turn it into a Billboard which can drive traffic to your other related posts that you think need traffic. Since people are looking and searching that keyword, when they see your billboard about that keyword, they may as well click on the billboard that you made to link to your other post.
- Social Media is not just about putting a “Share Button” in your blog—content is still the big issue as you still need to have good and shareable content. If you have the share button yet have no good content, the share button is still useless as your contents will not be shared by your readers. Good content means good step to start to be shared, thus good traffic to your site.
- Be relevant—being relevant means, you have to write contents that are relevant to the current events and issues in your community. Being relevant is being timely and updated. If for example: recently, all of us are aware of the catastrophe that happened in Japan and you would probably write about it when the event was still fresh. If you write about it a month or year after the tragedy, your post is no longer relevant unless otherwise you are making a history blog which of course not your purpose why you blog.
- Don’t think small—always think big so that you will get big things. Always be ambitious. Do not limit your thoughts in small things to accomplish because if you do, you will also accomplish small things but if you think big things, you will also accomplish BIG things.
- Learn PowerPoint—if you are planning to get advertisers into your blog site, you have to learn how to use PowerPoint because you need to write your proposal in PowerPoint that most decision makers prefer when they want to see your proposal. After learning PowerPoint, you need to make a proposal outline that is straightforward yet clear to the advertisers. Explain what your advertisers can get from you and how they benefit from your blog, etc.
- Build Content Partnership—based on my understanding, in this area comes the guest or ghost writing in bloggers term. You could let other bloggers write for you or you write for them and both of you are partners on each blog contents. Make good relationship with other bloggers as well as to your readers.
- Go for Direct Advertisers—if you have pay-per-click ads in your site and want to take advantage on the ads displaying in your site, you can actually go directly to such advertiser and contact them to advertise to your site directly; but take note you cannot click on the ads directly. Copy and paste the URL that is displayed on the ads and paste it on the address bar on your browser and go to their site. Locate the “Contact Us” page, find the marketing officer or any person that is connected to advertising and submit your proposal to them to become one of your blog sponsors.
- Don’t just….(Sorry I could not remember this part anymore as the slide popped up quickly. I will just wait for the files to be uploaded on Mr. Ople’s site
- Become Better Writers—as mentioned above, blogging is all about writing and writing skills. You will become good writers if you blog and you will become good blogger if you become good writers and vice versa.
- CARE—the last but probably the least amongst the ten. Care. You must care of everything and anything. Blogging is about writing so you have to care about your writing style and writing skills. I admit that I am not a perfect writer as I do have a lot of mistakes but I learned in this even that we should be careful in our writings. CARE for your readers. Caring for readers does not mean you have to touch or meet them in person but it is all about replying to their comments and queries. Do REPLY when someone needs reply. Uhmmm…I am guilty of it because I could not really reply to all my cementers but I am trying the best I can to answer them.

Wow, buti ka pa, nakaka-join ka ng mga ganitong events. I haven't attended any blogging event yet, at saka more on reading na lang ako. But thanks for summarizing one of your favorite presentations. No. 10 is really true, we need to have care -- 2 meanings: yong caring sa audience at careful sa sinasabi natin. Have another great day!
