Once again, Japan has shown the world a sublime initiative as it took a stride of recycling metals from old electronic devices like smartphones and laptops in creating the approximately 5,000 medals to be given to the winning athletes.
The citizens of Japan donated their old gadgets in response to the launch made by the organizing committee. The Japanese considered it as a unique opportunity to be part of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, thus they cooperated with such willingness as 90 % of the country’s cities, towns, and villages set up donation pick-up sites.
The two-year national effort to collect enough materials in order to produce the needed gold, silver, and bronze medals for the 2020 Olympics was indeed one of the Japanese people’s pride. The collection produced 70 pounds of gold, 7,700 pounds of silver, and 4,850 pounds of bronze. All from the 89 tons of small electrical devices.
The billions worth of precious metals such as gold and silver in the electronic devices had finally come to ensure its seat of creativity. The Olympic medals were not just the prized artifacts that were made from recycled materials because the podiums were also built out of household and ocean plastic. The torchbearers’ uniforms were also partially made from recycled bottles.
The ingenuity of Japan has firmly established a great impact and it hopes to bring precedence for future Olympic Games.
